The Moors and the Christians
The Moors and the Christians festival of Lleida
is usually held on May. With the celebration of this event, the
city has proudly recovered a lost tradition whose background dates
back to the 12th century.
It is a colourful event where about 700 people dressed up with
splendid warrior uniforms from both sides, take active part. In
the morning there is the so-called children's parade and at midday
there is the introduction of the bands, which will play the city's
festival own music.
In the afternoon the Moor and Christian groups gather in Seu Vella
in order to parade along the most central streets of Lleida.
Before dusk the leaders of both sides begin some satirical speeches that give rise to an argument which is followed by a spectacular battle, with the incomparable landmark of Seu Vella as a backdrop.
