San Esteban de Gormaz information
San Esteban de Gormaz is in the western part
of the province of Soria. Its beauty and its historic vestiges
have earned it the status of Historic-Artistic Site.
This old town by a castle on top of a hill overlooking the entire
valley and several main streets which run inside the old city
walls, along the southern side of the hill. It has two Romanesque
churches, declared to be Cultural Heritage: Nuestra Señora
del Rivero, from the 12th century, which stands on a small hill
overlooking the banks of the river Duero; and San Miguel, built
in 1081, which was the first arcaded Romanesque church in the
province. Also significant is the town's arch, which was the entrance
gate of the old wall and is currently one of the main points of
access to the main square; and the medieval bridge with 16 arches
which spans the Duero. In Calle Mayor you can see several large
emblazoned houses, with coats of arms belonging to noble families.
