Carmona Surroundings
The Guadalquivir countryside
The excellent geographical location of Carmona makes it particularly
attractive as a base for excursions to well-populated Guadalquivir
countryside. In the immediate area there are two beautiful localities
called Mairena del Alcor and El Viso del Alcor, which boast excellent
urbanistic features and Mudéjar churches. Sights to see
in Mairena include Luna Castle, and a stroll around El Viso's
streets, gaced with beautiful portals and wall tiling, is a must.
Another nearby villages is the vibrant Lora del Río, whose
river is none other than the Guadalquivir and which has a beautiful
town hall and house presided over by the tall tower of the parish
church. Well worth seeing in La Campana is the church of Santa
María, with its altarpiece by Alonso Cano. Carmona is linked
by motorway to another monumental town called Écija, which
is situated on the banks of the river Genil and which is marked
by the profusion and beauty of its tall Mudéjar and Baroque
towers and by its wealth of palaces and churches. Even nearer
is Marchena, another remarkable monumental town, which presents
a combination of Moorish walls - Arch of La Rosa, Gate of Morón
- and a variety of churches in different styles, one of which,
the Mudéjar church of San Juan, contains a small gallery
hung with painting by Zurbarán. Also in the area is Alcalá
de Guadaira, which has a large Moorish fortress and is famous
for its bread. In various directions and somewhat further away
are Osuna, Utrera and Morón, locations to be added to this
catalogue of monumental towns.
