It is easy to get excited during Holy week in Rota,
life is lived in a special way and it is a perfect
prelude to the San isidro Pilgrimage and the Spring
Fiesta. The most noticeable festivity though is that
of La Urta.
The Urta Fiesta, designated as of National Tourist
Interest in Andalusia is celebrated for seven days.
One day the competition for preparing the characteristic
dish of the locale, Urta a la Roteña is held
after which it is sampled by all those in attendance
along with a good red wine. In Rota the traveller
can enjoy the sea on the white sand beaches of La
costilla or La Ballena go to Los Corrales to see how
at low tide fish are trapped in rock pens that date
from the Arab era, play golf at the Costa Ballena
complex or visit a seaside village that guards such
treasures as the Nuestra Señora de la O Church
or the La Luna Castle. And don’t miss the Virgen
del Carmen fiestas on 16 July.
