Alcolea, located in the heart of the alpujarra region
between the Gador and Sierra Nevada mountain rangers,
boasts nor only the tallest century-old olive trees
in the world which grow all about in plots and terraces,
but also a series of scenic vantage points for viewing
the beautiful landscape of the Alpujarra villages.
The traveller who happens upon Alcolea has a unique
opportunity to get to know an authentic Alpujarra
village, with its hermitage of San Sebastian and San
Ildefonso. One festival that will attract his attention
is the burial of the fox. At ten in the morning a
hearty breakfast of rolls, wine, coffee and chocolate
in the town hall plaza opens the festival, which consists
of parading through the streets of the village with
a rag animal while singing jesting songs. The festival
ends with the burning of the fox and a number of musical
events.
