One of the best castles in Spain.
It was built by the archbishop of Seville and the lord of Coca and Alaejos, Don Alonso de Fonseca. During the wars of the Communities it remained faithful to Carlos V.
It is a mix of western and Arabic military architecture, which is apparent in its decoration. It has a square plan, a moat and three walled enclosures, which gives it an impregnable aspect that has characterised it over the centuries. The keep is located in the second premises. It is made of brick and its walls are greatly decorated. The interior is very luxurious and lavish, and maintains its Mudejar decoration. Because it is so grandiose, it was used more as a palace than as a fortress. It is one of the crowning works of the military Mudejar style.
