Theatre and Dance

Barcelona and the stage arts: growth and quality

Barcelona has a long-standing tradition of theatre, but it has also opened its arms to the latest avant-garde currents and the most radical and daring new work. In fact the city today is a focus of theatrical innovation for the whole of Spain.

Barcelona boasts a theatre-going public numbering more than 2 million people a year, and the city is currently witnessing a significant expansion of theatre and dance activity as a vital part of its wider cultural panorama, exemplified by the opening of the Ciutat del Teatre, ('Theatre City'), the new home of the Institut del Teatre -one of the most modern centres of training in the stage arts in Europe- and the inauguration of the new Teatre Lliure in the remodelled Palau de l'Agricultura.

The range of Barcelona's stage facilities can be differentiated in three main blocs: public theatre (examples here are the Teatre Grec, which gave its name to the city's annual Grec Summer Festival, the Mercat de les Flors and the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya); private theatres (with a highly diversified commercial circuit), and a series of alternative theatre venues.

In the field of dance, Barcelona regularly welcomes leading international companies. The high level of interest and support is reflected in the number of venues that have staged dance performances (the Mercat de les Flors, the Teatre Nacional, L'Espai, the Sala Beckett and La Porta) and in the prominent presence of dance in the Festival Grec.

Theaters of Barcelona

Barcelona's theatre scene does not enjoy the same international reputation as Madrid's does, however, what it lacks in literary authority, it makes up for in the visual and audio spectacle of its performances. The theatre scene in the city is lively and well aended, including work by regional and international playwrights.
