The Cantabrian town was declared to be of National Historic-Artistic Interest in 1978 and gathers together a valuable collection of classicist architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Liérganes sits at the foot of two small hills, Marimón and Cotillamón, popularly known as "the breasts of Liérganes". The old part of town, named El Mercadil, as well as popular large houses, contains the Palace of Rañada or Cuesta-Mercadillo, the church of San Sebastián, the parish church of San Pedro Ad Víncula, the houses of Setién and Cañones, the chapels of Humilladero and El Carmen and the new bridge. Also noteworthy is the spa of Liérganes, which, set in a magnificent property of stately woodland, has a characteristically 19th century air.
