Albaycin information
This district of Muslim origin can be entered from the Puerta
de Elvira (Port of Elvira), one of the most important gateways
that Granada had back in the ages. Walking up the Cuesta de la
Alhacaba and following the walls of the alcazaba de Cadima (Cadima
fortress), the visitor will arrive at Plaza Larga (Long Square).
There the Arco de las Pesas (Arch of Weights) can be found. It
leads to a maze- like group of streets that is worthy of getting
lost in. In these street- mazes, there are some interesting spots
worth to be visited.
The Mirador de San Cristóbal (San Cristóbal Viewpoint) next to
the church of San Cristobál offers an amazing view of the Vega
(the fertile plain), Sierra Nevada and the Alcazaba de cadime
(Cadima fortress). Other interesting places to visit are the Iglesia
del Salvador (Church of the Savior) which was once a mosque, the
Mirador de San Nicolás (San Nicolás Viewpoint) which leads to
the plaza de San Miguel Bajo is located. In these area is also
the Carmen- Museo de Max Moreau (Museum- Villa with a garden of
Max Moreau) where the tourist can see the work of this versatile
artist as well as a genuine Carmen, the typical style of the house
of the Albaycín. Close to San Miguel of the convent of the nuns
of the Order of St. Clare called Santa Isabel la Real.
It was founded by the Catholic queen Elisabeth in the beginning
of the 16th century. A narrow street that starts out in San Miguel
takes the visitor to the palace of Darbalbhorra. The architecture
of this building is considered to be of the domestic Moorish style
and it is said that the mother of Boabdil inhabited it.
