Bilbao: Cathedral of Santiago
This Gothic church was built on top of an old hermitage that dates back to the Santiago pilgrimages. It is the oldest building in Bilbao.
The cathedral has three naves, covered with ribbed vaults. Although the building is essentially Gothic, the actual façade and the tower were built in the nineteenth century. The choir stalls and the cloister are exquisite with the latter ornately Gothic in style. The crypt was built in the old hermitage, and still has the hermitage's original walls. There are two doorways, one which is Renaissance in style and the other Neoclassical.
