Barbastro information

This village belongs to the region of Somontano de Barbastro, a land that grows wines with a world-famous Designation of Origin. The prolific agricultural and industrial activity in this region allows the organisation of prestigious fairs and trade shows. Barbastro constitutes the natural gate into most of Sierra de Guara. In the town centre we find the cathedral (16th century), declared a Historic-Artistic Heritage, which is surrounded by the Archaeological Garden, with valuable artefacts from the 12th-18th centuries. The Diocesan Museum, the Episcopal Palace, the house of Argensola, the City Hall, the church and fountain of San Francisco, the Baselga house (16th century), and the San Julián compound all hold artistic treasures that themselves narrate the history of Barbastro.

Since 1967, the city celebrates a Cultural Week that holds art exhibitions, round tables, literary awards, and so on, which show the cultural splendour accumulated by the area in the course of many years, ever-growing thanks to the aid of the younger generations.

The beauty of the natural surroundings make it the ideal place for excursions and skiing. The Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park shelters important species of flora and fauna, and is the home to one of the largest populations of carrion birds in Europe, in an area that was put under special protection by the E.U.
